This is the page I have dedicated to my jacket, the process, and methods used to change, alter, and upgrade it.
Overview
I have a large duster that has survived me for many years. It shows all of those years and is held together with gorilla tape in various places. I will be augmenting, improving, and upgrading it for riding.
Origins
This was originally an oilskin/waxed cotton, australian duster, with optional snap on hood and cape/mantle piece. It was purchased around 2003 and has survived me since then.
Evolution
After retiring some worn out textile motorcycle gear, I needed a new answer for the winters in the great Pacific North Wet. I pressed my summer riding jacket into service and threw the duster over it for greater wind blocking and partial water proofing.
This combination is not perfect, but has worked well overall. However, it has also seen the duster begin to degrade far faster than it was previously as it is the first line of defence against motorcycling conditions, year round.
Repairing or covering that damage was the original impulse of this project. After a little thinking, further design work, and some inspiration, I realized I could do more than just repair it. Thus, the road warrior aesthetic was brought into play. Functional armor plating, decorative leather, metal banding, and such are added for either visual or practical effects.
